NBA Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach Lionel Hollins and other local leaders are volunteering to support United Way Day of Action and Raise Your Hand, TN by reading to children and supporting efforts to improve local tutoring and mentoring next Thursday, June 21.

(MEMPHIS, TN) NBA Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach Lionel Hollins and additional local leaders are coming together to read to children and encourage more people to volunteer as mentors and tutors to local youth.

Hollins and the volunteer leaders are participating in United Way’s Day of Action and the Raise Your Hand, TN collaborations next Thursday, June 21st.

United Way of the Mid-South is partnering with Books from Birth, Literacy Mid-South, Clergy United for the Memphis Schools, Stand for Children and several summer camp programs in the Raise Your Hand TN coalition for Day of Action. Day of Action is an effort led by United Way Worldwide and local United Way organizations, encouraging people across the globe to engage in community-improving work on June 21st.

Across Tennessee, local United Way organizations are aligning efforts to generate more volunteers to “raise their hand” to read to, tutor, and mentor children and youth as part of the Raise Your Hand, TN movement.

Several prominent citizens and local celebrities including Coach Hollins, Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich, local television personality Mr. Chuck, local author Jae Henderson and Unified School Board Commissioner Tomeka Hart are also participating in readings with children to bring greater awareness to the importance of community volunteers in helping improve student achievement outcomes.

Readings and sign-ups will take place in five locations across Memphis (Neighborhood Christian Centers, Knowledge Quest School-Age Academy, Girls Incorporated, Agape Powerlines Center, and Memphis Urban League) next Thursday morning. Each reading event includes story times with children, book giveaways, and volunteer sign-up.
