Do you or someone you know need nonprofit help? Your best “first step” is to call 2-1-1, the region’s information and referral system for nonprofit services.
2-1-1 call center:
Recently, a 2-1-1 operator faced a situation that called for knowledge, compassion and information. The operator reports:
“Yesterday I got a call from a company out of our area which has employees in Memphis. An employee had been killed in an accident and the person at the company wanted to know if I could give her referrals for grief counseling for some of the employees. She also mentioned most of the employees spoke Spanish and referrals were located that met that criteria.”
Just as you dial 9-1-1 during a crisis like a house fire or medical emergency, dial 2-1-1 when you have a need for local nonprofit services and information. As seen in the example above, trained operators are able to ask for details related to needs and provide information about local nonprofits that can be of assistance.
2-1-1 is a partnership between United Way of the Mid-South and the Memphis Public Library System. You can also use the backup call number, 901.415.2790. If calling from Arkansas or Mississippi, please dial 866.735.7211
The system is open from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday thru Thursday,
10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday,
and 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
If calling after hours, leave a message and you will be called back during operating hours.
2-1-1 collaborations in many states have created websites to help connect you with the information you need. (Note: These sites are updated and managed by 2-1-1 organizations and not by United Way of the Mid-South.) Here are the 2-1-1 sites serving our Mid-South area, as well as the national 2-1-1 site.
